Firewood Facts

A standard cord of wood has a volume of 128 cubic feet, 4 ft. high and 8 ft. long.  Face cords do not have standard measurement, so volume can not be determined.  Air dried wood with 25% moisture will yield about 5,800 BTU's per pound.

Maintenance Of Your Johnson

We all know that when we buy a car we have to maintain it with regular oil changes, checking the tire pressure, fluid levels, etc.  What about an outdoor wood furnace?  Outdoor wood furnaces must be maintained too.  An oxygen inhibitor chemical must always be used to minimize corrosion.  We sell Water Treatment 101 to meet this need.  Water must be tested at least annually, and treatment added as required.  For furnaces using antifreeze it must be checked at least once per year, and sight checked to make sure that it isn't discolored, indicating the need to change the antifreeze.  Any furnace that contains antifreeze and has been overheated needs to be drained and flushed, and new antifreeze must be added.  Every two to three years the furnace must be drained and flushed.  It is our recommendation that when performing the drain and flush that all systems be cleaned prior to refilling with Prep 102, a metal cleaner and conditioner.  The Prep 102 must also be used prior to filling on all new furnaces to remove any byproducts of the manufacturing process ensuring that you begin with good, clean metal.  It is also very important to only use soft water to fill your furnace, as hard water can cause lime scale build up on furnaces the same way that it causes lime scale build up on faucets and fixtures in your home.  This lime scale causes reduced heat transfer and will adversely affect your furnace.  We sell softening kits that can meet this need if you don't have soft water available at your tap.
Additionally other maintenance must be preformed:

More information on maintenance and instructions can be found in our owner's manual.

By properly maintaining your furnace you will extend the life of it and protect your investment.
